the rape of Persephone

dry point print of Hades and Persephone 

Persephone, the beautiful daughter of Zeus and Demeter, kidnapped by Hades and taken to the underworld.

while Persephone was gone her mother( the goddess of the harvest and the fertility of the earth.) stricken by grief and anger stopped providing life to the crops bringing forth a plague on humanity. Zeus made a deal with Demeter and Hades to end the plague, Persephone could not leave the underworld completely she was bound there for a section of the year, at the beginning of every autumn she would descend to the underworld were she will stay untill the start of spring. in the time shes gone her mother Demeter would not bring life to the crops and a season a darkness would remaining each year.

heavily inspired by gustave dore and his etchings for Dante's inferno i decided to create my own version of purgatory with a more contemporary  centered composition 

a recently deceased women  surronded by tortured souls of years past 

the origianl drawing from which the etching was made.
